Growing up as a catholic and going to catholic school, I am sorry to see this once great institution destroy itself from the top to the bottom. Millions of working class children ,whose families could not afford private school, were given great primary education. I remember growing up that I was far ahead academically from my public school educated friends and if you lived in the parish, you went for free.
But now it is out in the open that many priests have used their position to sexually abuse some of the young children that were put in their care. Why has this happened? To be a catholic priest requires a vow of chastity. This is a great sacrifice for most men. It means not have a wife and family. Most protestant and orthodox religions wisely let their priest marry and have a family. but the Catholic Church did not want their priests to marry so they could devote all their time to the people in their parish. A nice idea but as the populations have grown over the centuries, the church needed more priests to fill the need.
Unfortunately, there are not that many men that would make the sacrifice and take the vow of chastity. But, men who were not sexually attracted to women and had no desire to have their own family, the priesthood would be a good deal for such men. All the benefits and honors of priesthood without the sacrifice.
So, with the news over the last decades of sexually abuse of children by catholic priests from different countries around the world is proof that the priesthood has been infiltrated by evil men using the priesthood as a cover for their deviant behavior.
I became suspicious of this Pope Francis , that became Pope when the prior pope resigned ,which has never happened before in the 2 thousand year history of the Catholic Church. He has made remarks that may be heresy. I talked about this pope when visited the US a couple of years ago
